Kentucky Derby in San Francisco

Hola! This past weekend was filled with floral printed dresses, pastel colored pants, bow ties, large floppy hats, and of course mint juleps. That’s right, I am talking about the wildly entertaining Kentucky Derby.

Everyone’s favorite event because it only requires two minutes of your attention and then you can go back to partying. While this is on my bucket list of things to do, I had to settle for celebrating in San Francisco.

After our two days filled with consuming so much wine our skin started to smell like grapes, we drove from Napa Valley down to San Francisco. Knowing that we would be in California, we thought we would try to find a viewing party at a local bar where they had prizes for Best Hats. I came across this bar called The Tope Lounge. Tickets were only $30 which was a lot less than some other places I had found. It included unlimited BBQ and two drink tickets. Not a bad deal right?

Due to heavy drinking the night before, and my friend claiming that the last bar we went to stole her soul and self-respect. We were a little late to the party and by the time we got there, it was PACKED! It was so hot and crowded from all the large stupid hats taking up so much damn space. My mint julep had zero mint. My friend looked like she was about to puke on the next person that touched her. There was no BBQ, but instead huge ass chicken breasts which took 20-30 minutes to cook on the grill. To top things off, neither of the horses we drew in the raffle were even close to making top three. I actually think mine was dead last. After about an hour, my friend and I looked at each other and decided we would rather walk around the city than stay where we were.

We went back to the hotel and changed. Since it had been awhile since my friend had been to San Francisco. We made sure to do some the touristy things in San Francisco. Check out my recap below and revisit all of my Things to Do list. Even though we had less than 24 hours in the city, we got a lot accomplished! Each time I go back, I fall more and more in love with the Bay area and the people here. Hoping to make another trip soon!

Accommodations

The Westin St. Francis Union Square– absolutely loved this hotel. From the marble floors to the gold trim. It oozes classiness. This hotel is in the perfect location. Right near the trolley stop, the BART train stop, and great shopping.

Restaurants

Fat Angel– if I lived in San Francisco and had a man, I would come here every weekend. This spot is so romantic. Dimly lit with dark woods and candles on the table. My friend and I ordered the cheese plate and some salami. The cheese ranged from hard sheep cheese to a combo of goat cheese and blue cheese. I washed it down with a glass of Cremant de Loire.

My Ivy– dirty and quick Thai food. Order the chicken lettuce wraps and the tofu pad thai. I promise you can’t go wrong!
